What is AI video production?
AI video production is making commercials and films with generative AI instead of, or alongside, cameras and crews. A production team still writes, casts, directs, edits, grades and mixes the film; AI replaces much of the physical shoot.
The quality gap between AI footage and a traditional shoot has closed quickly. Characters can now stay consistent across a whole campaign, camera moves can be directed precisely, and finished spots run on television. What separates good AI video from the rest is the same thing that always separated good commercials from bad ones: the people making the decisions.
What can AI video make today?
Broadcast and online commercials, character animation, product spots, brand and industry films, and every social version of them. With real footage in the mix, it can also keep real places, products and people accurate.
Commercials
Spots for television, streaming, cinema and online video.
Characters and animation
Mascots, photoreal creatures and stylised worlds that stay on-model.
Hybrid productions
Real locations, products or performances with AI-built worlds around them.
Product video
Hero product moments with packaging placed from approved artwork.
Brand and industry films
Scale, remote sites and sensitive subjects without crews or real patients.
Versions
Verticals, cutdowns and languages from one approved master.
It still has limits, and a good studio will tell you where they are. Text and logos are added in post rather than generated. Exact products are composited from real artwork. Long unbroken takes are edited together from shorter shots. Real people appear only with their consent.
How does an AI video production work?
Much like any commercial: brief, concept, look development and approvals, production, then finishing and delivery. The difference is that you can see and approve the look of every character and scene before anything is animated.
1. Brief and concept
The story, the script and the feeling the film has to land.
2. Look and approvals
Casting, characters, locations, wardrobe and style frames, approved before anything moves.
3. Production
Shot by shot, directed and reviewed like dailies. Real capture where accuracy matters.
4. Finishing
Edit, colour, sound design, music and the mix.
5. Delivery
Broadcast masters, captions, cutdowns and every aspect ratio.
AI, traditional or hybrid: which is right for you?
AI is strongest where a traditional shoot is expensive or impossible: scale, locations, seasons, characters and versions. Traditional production still wins on real performances, live moments and anything that must be exactly as it is. Hybrid gives you both.
Choose AI when
The idea needs scale, impossible camera moves, characters, many versions, or a season you cannot wait for.
Choose traditional when
The film depends on a real person’s performance, a live event or a testimonial.
Choose hybrid when
A real place, product or person has to be exact and everything around it can be built.
How much does AI video production cost?
Usually less than a comparable traditional shoot, but it is still a production with a real cost. The savings come from what AI removes: travel, permits, weather days, set builds and reshoots. The creative, the approvals and the finishing still take skilled people and real time.
Length and number of shots
More shots mean more to design, make and review.
Characters
A new character needs a bible and approvals before it can appear.
Real capture
Location photography or a shoot day for hybrid work.
Versions and languages
Each format and language adds finishing time, but far less than a reshoot.
Finishing and delivery
Music, mix, captions and broadcast specs.
Rights and talent
Licensed music, likeness consent and union requirements where they apply.
The best way to know is to ask. Send a brief and we will come back with a clear scope and a number before anything starts.
How long does it take?
Weeks rather than days for most commercials. Look development and approvals take the first part, production and review the middle, and finishing the end. Versions of an approved spot are much quicker.
Who owns an AI commercial, and does it need a disclosure?
You get full commercial usage rights to the finished film. Disclosure depends on where it runs and what it shows: realistic AI people and product claims are where the rules are tightening.
Copyright law around AI-generated material is still developing in both Canada and the United States, which is one more reason the human work matters: the script, the direction, the edit and the finish are what make the film yours.
On disclosure, Canadian Ad Standards guidance says AI-generated images of what a product does should be disclosed, New York requires a disclosure for ads with AI-generated performers, and major platforms label realistic AI content. We flag anything that applies during approvals so your team can decide early.
How to choose an AI video agency
Look at their client work, not their demos. Then ask who directs it, how you approve it, and how it gets finished.
Real client work
Spots made for real brands, ideally ones that ran.
Production people
Directors, producers and editors with traditional production behind them.
A clear approval process
You should see and sign off characters, locations and looks before production.
Consistency
Characters and products that stay the same from shot to shot.
A real finish
Colour, sound, mix and delivery to broadcast and platform specs.
Straight answers
Honest limits, honest timelines and a clear position on rights and disclosure.
